5 Tips for Packing for Alaska

Rainy Days Seward

We get it, packing for a state that spans the distance from northern Minnesota to Florida is tough. Depending on the time of year you’re traveling, it can be 80+ degrees in Fairbanks, and 50 degrees and raining in Seward. A few tips can help you plan for packing everything you need into a bag or two.

Tip #1: Layers

Instead of packing bulky items for potentially chilly days, consider packing smaller, more flexibly used layers. Start with a light base layer of synthetics or wool, both tops and bottoms. Add a mid-layer for your upper body, such as a fleece jacket or sweater. Lastly, be optimistic and pack a t-shirt or light top for warmer days.

Waterproof Jacket

Tip #2: Waterproof Clothing

If your travels include visiting coastal Alaska, waterproof layers will be a must for many of your adventures. Choose a mid to high priced option and skip the cheap options or plastic ponchos. As they say, “there are no bad days, only bad gear.” Coastal Alaska is a temperate rainforest and most locations average more than 60” of precipitation annually. Be sure to bring both a jacket and pants.

Alaska Hiking Shoes

Tip #3: Comfortable Hiking Shoes

Expect to spend time walking each day, or perhaps even hiking some of Alaska’s beautiful trails. If you’re joining a sightseeing/wildlife tour you’ll be comfortable standing on deck. You’ll also have the added comfort of water-resistant shoes for those wet days.

Tip #4: Check with Your Tour Company

Many tour companies provide some clothing or gear when you join a trip. Give your tour company a shout, or visit their website to find out if they provide specialized gear for you.

Alaska Ulu

Tip #5: Save Room for Souvenirs!

You’ll find there are an abundance places to pick up an ulu, t-shirt or salmon jerky!
